Backtracking is necessary for the story they are telling but it felt like a chore and just after you have completed the chore of grinding. An other factor that really holds the game back is the end, when the story is getting good, nearly all of your gameplay is backtracking. However that is not the case as even on easy mode you will need to grind levels to progress. Judging from these last two features it would appear that the developers wanted to make a game more palatable to the modern gamer aka no grinding. The default/brave system is a good enough gimmick tacked onto the traditional jrpg combat system and the game allows you to change the difficulty and encounter rate. It takes awhile for the story to get interesting and the characters to develop (i'm talking about 30 hours in) but boy what a payoff it is when they do.
